ramadan journal - days 4 to 10

Day 4 - currently reading
In Ramadan the focus is on Qur'an.

Day 5 - something crafty
Something my kids got up to without my knowing!

Day 6 - workspace
It's boxes galore here!

Day 7 - white
a surprisingly cloudy sky for Jeddah

Day 8 - handwriting
It's funny finding old notes as I pack everything up!

Day 9 - this happened today
A delicious Egyptian iftar (after sunset) meal prepared by a dear friend

Day 10 - grateful for ...
... the roof over our heads, the clothes on our backs and the bread on our table!

ramadan journal days 2 and 3

Day 2: prayer/forgiveness

I have 4 little people and a more-tired-than-usual self to take care of and since the summer holidays began all the cracks in sibling relationships have been magnified. There's something about a bored little person, heat and then some teen girl hormones in there too that can make things quite testing. It's very easy to make mistakes but I feel that forgiveness is learnt somewhere in there too. In amongst the mundane bickering and teasing and full-scale fights, they learn to to put things behind them and carry on being there for each other ... until the next fight!

Day 3: on my table

Every day, for the last three days, we've been making use of the mix of fruits available to us. It's just perfect for ending a hot day of fasting!

How is your Ramadan/summer going?

Ramadan Journal Day 1

I've been away for a while. I think I needed it! There has been a lot going on here. Today is the first day of Ramadan, the month of fasting, spiritual reconnection and recharging the soul. I am sitting amongst boxes and scissors and brown tape as I try to manage some of our packing. We are booked to leave Saudi Arabia in just over a month in sha Allah! So, I thought I might try to join in with this Ramadan Journal over at Creating Memories. I think it will be a nice way of blogging my last month here and journaling a part of our Ramadan. Things are even more chaotic as I'm expecting baby number 5 in sha Allah! So do bear with me!

Ramadan Journal Day 1: Suhoor/Dawn
It's surprisingly dark after the Fajr/Dawn prayer but behind those lights and buildings is where the sun creeps up from!

Ramadan mubarak!

I'll leave you with a few things we've been doing!

just noticing ...

little things

that while I teach my kids, they teach me [I love knowing them better, Allah yahfadhuhum]

that children are capable of a lot more than we think

that technology means that I might see my parents more now!

that milky coffee (or tea) and crochet make me feel good [No, I definitely noticed that a while ago!]

that rays of sunlight can go unnoticed, so I should notice them more!
that teamed with instagram they can make our boring doors look not so boring

that it's getting late and I need to lesson plan!

What are you noticing these days?

* I'm trying to blog everyday for the rest of this month for Blogtoberfest. Can I do it?

right here in Ramadan

Oh yes, I'm still around! I got busy with stuff ... as you do. And then there were weddings and the 'flu knocked me out (strange time of year for 'flu I know) and when I thought I was regaining energy, a stomach bug came along! Alhamdulillah I feel completely recovered now and we're actually one week in to Ramadan (the month of fasting).

Ramadan is a pretty amazing time for me. But this time, I know that this will probably be my last Ramadan in Saudi Arabia! We're getting ready to move to another continent, another lifestyle. We're getting ready for another chapter of our lives, another adventure. But before we do that I want to savour my time here in Jeddah and it's surroundings. I will try and share some of my thoughts here in sha Allah.

For the time being, I've had a week's break from eating clean, but now I'm back on it. Yes, that's what I'm doing these days too! I love that while I'm fasting, I feel that my other senses are so much stronger when I'm not concerned with taste! The smell of tropical fruits and the warm aroma of natural coconut oil, the sticky elasticity of brioche dough through my fingers and the bleeding dark red of sweet cherries in my cheesecake! Ma sha Allah.

I love that Ramadan started with my brother and his family sharing experiences of their trip to Kashmir along with some of the flavours of one of my ancestral lands. Yes, they served up some refreshing Kashmiri Qahwa, an exotic light, sweet, hot drink of apricots, raisins, nuts, saffron and more! He also cooked up Kashmiri chicken and almond curry!

I'm also loving that in my household, both father ...

... and daughter ...

... leave traces of their "food styling" on my phone!

And today must be filled with a bit more of this ...

... and some more hooking up too ...

... before we get together with family!

I'll leave you with this lovely blog where Neelu is journaling her Ramadan experience with daily prompts. It's a nice idea.

photography challenge day - 3KCBWDAY2

Once again, I'm taking part here and today was a photography challenge. Was this a challenge or what? Once upon a time, I had ideas about working in layers and creating fantastic effects (not that I'm amazing at Photoshop). Yes, edits are allowed and there was a lot of playing around I had imagined.

That was until the monitor went kaput and the laptop fell into a somewhat critical condition.

Apps to the rescue?

Like what you see? You can nominate me! Here!

crafty goings on

If you're a crafter, why not take part in this wonderful initiative ... a craft auction! A five year old boy is in desperate need of eye surgery, without which he may lose his sight! Read the details of this urgent appeal here and what you might be able to do to help! Let's craft for a good cause!

If you're a knitter or crocheter, you might like to take part in this great little blogging challenge.

You are set a topic for each day and use that as a guide for your blog post.

I've never taken part in either of these kinds of things before so I'm really looking forward to them! Why don't you join in!

In the meantime, have I been crafting? Of course I have. I can't share much though as I've taken part in a couple of swaps!

I've played around with that burlap a bit

and that thing they call instagram too!

an amazing discovery ... tamees made with brown flour!

What have YOU been up to?

ETA: I don't have an iphone. I've just started using instagram on an android. But hey, if you don't have/can't have/don't want to have a smart phone and still get that instagram-y effect, have you checked out picasa lately? Picasa is free to download. If Blogger is your platform, your images are automatically saved in Picasa. It's a great little photo editing tool and it now has so many new features. You CAN get those colours and effects!
