my creative space - finding ...

... that crocheting with plastic is FULL of challenges but it's growing on me!

... that it's great to do something different on the weekend

... that I don't always appreciate the nature of glowing, pre-dusk sunlight, even if it is in amongst the concrete

... some tiled patterns on a walk

... that I don't miss this kind of thing as much as I thought I would

... that even after shopping for that dress, I keep having the urge to take pictures of dresses. Is my subconscience telling me something?

... a nice day bed, not buying it, just admiring it

... that after 14 years of marriage, I didn't know that my husband once had a summer job carving traditional, wooden furniture and that his mother used to make her own looms, all by herself and weave mats, some of which were made out of recycled plastic bags ... YES, she was in the game well before us trocheters

... that it's been raining today!

... that Palestine is in the thoughts and prayers of many

And here my other new and not so new "finds":

a shop full of handcrafted items, where they have done new things with traditional Arabic accessories (yes, those wrap-around trousers)

and they have this great gift idea of a recipe and spice mix (this is one is for Kablie Rice)

and everything is made by needy women!

a creative mint - beautiful, creative blog

annie's place - and another one!

alternating cast-on for ultimate stretch - a knitting tutorial I'd like to try!

a great way to use up those awful adhesive book covers that I didn't have to use this year because our paperwork hasn't come through and so we decided to homeschool the kids full time!

thought walking - a great way to solve problems (article)

celebrate colour

I grew up in London. We had four seasons. We complained about the rain. But we went wherever we needed to go in it. School didn't close because of it. We didn't stay indoors because of it. Snow didn't stop us either (not most of the time). We piled the layers on and started up our heaters (and later central heating). After the cold winters we looked forward to the blossoming of flowers and the sound of bird song. We walked to school on frosty mornings while the sun shone. Then we ran after the ice cream van once the warm weather was with us. We played outside longer due to longer daylight hours. We enjoyed more picnics and barbecues. Then the leaves became brown, red and golden. We dreaded the cold of the coming winter but we enjoyed the sights and sounds of autumn. The crunch of leaves beneath our feet. Children playing conkers. I'm happy where I am but sometimes I feel homesick. Sometimes.

And then the weather changes.

I savour it.

But I still long for Autumnal colours.

And flavours.

I made this scarf and then stitched it up with a twist to moebius it up! I love this mathematical concept.

I realise I have a thing for autumnal colours!

I had hoped to join in with this colourful project. But today's the last day. Still. You can check out lots of lovely contributions here.

I'm so glad I can share Autumn (or Fall if you like) with you via cyberspace.

Sometimes in life we get thrown a curve ball. Mine is no different. This space, the sharing, colour and warmth makes it a little bit easier to stay calm and carry on!

my creative space - sc, sc, sc,

Reasons why I don't loooooove amigurumi:

1. I find seemingly never-ending rounds or rows of single crochet boring.
2. There's too much fiddly stitching involved.
3. There's no smooth, flowing crochet involved.
4. Most of the time I can't do something else at the same time.
5. It takes me too long to complete even a small project because of the above!

But still,

I gave it a go.

Then I lost my weaving-in needle. So I have to wait until I go home (I've been staying at my parents') to finish this off!

In the meantime,

  • I got stuck into something more autumnal

  • enjoyed early morning sunlight

  • went out walking in my parents, oh-so-quiet compound

It's becoming a bit of jungle!

While I cook something up for our returned and returning travellers, check out some more creative spaces.

intense

from here

I love the intensity of these colours and the overall styles. I had a teeny tiny room as a teenager and my Mum let me paint two of the walls red. Solid, block red. She let me make it totally mine!

my creative space ...

... takes me back to my hexagons!

Lots of frogging and re-crocheting later ...

... I have a big hexagon ...

... and another one!  The blanket wasn't going to do well, with two girls having to share it!  So I think two big cushions or floor cushions for their room is a safer bet.

And now I will carry on weaving in those ends!

When I get bored of the ends, I have a bit of this going on ...

I did manage to finish off my set of six tea glasses!

my creative space ...

I saw this and remembered my "need" for Moroccan-style tea glasses!

I figured ...

I think they'll work equally well for Moroccan green tea (shay maghrabi) or Arabic coffee (qahwa).  AND you don't burn your fingers!

What do you think?

I've used the POKAL shot glasses from IKEA.  They look big in the photos but they're tiny!
I have three more glasses, so I'll see about getting those done before we take the kids to Jeddah Science Oasis.

books, knitting and crochet

... are things that I'm pretty much in to.  Well, maybe not so much the "knitting" part!

Did you catch my post about a certain design book obsession we often have here?  We are indulging again.  Just a little.

I was given a gift too!  Ma sha Allah! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry though.

Laugh: I've been wanting to have another go with the knitting needles.
Cry: I was given this book because it was thought that all of that stuff I do with a HOOK and yarn is "knitting"!!!

I am looking forward to a little knitting challenge though.
Moving swiftly onwards (to crochet!), just when you thought I'd had enough of year-long crochet-alongs and piles of various squares ...

What?  No crazy colours?  Yes, this time we have homogenous yarn and colour coordination.  Talk about organised, eh?

Hmmm, ok, there might be some craziness in the colour, but only because it has been requested by a 7 year old!

And look what we saw at our "local", Swedish furniture store!

The pictures are not so great, but those are crocheted appliques.  AND it was my 8 year old who spotted that first!  AND she said, "You can make those!" In sha Allah another project idea?

They do have quite a bit of crochet going on in their Bathroom section:

But there was one really cool one that I just can't find!  A circley one.  Have you seen it?
