what i was doing two days ago ...

... had nothing to do with two long needles, or the sewing machine, or my favourite Adobe programs (I have been playing around a bit) or paints, pastels etc. etc. I'm back with the hook!

I was trying to finish something that has been a work-in-progress for too long.

Just rippling along.  Almost there.

But here's something I just forgot to show you.

Last month, I made a little top for my 10 year old.

It was a daunting task I'd set myself as I'm not at all proficient with a sewing machine!
Of course I had to make one for my 8 year old.

It looks huge for her more petite frame, but she loves it and says she'll wear it over a plain t-shirt or top! Yes, I deliberately made the task simpler for myself (no sleeves, a straight-forward neckline)!

sew encouraging

I'm stumped! I'm pretty blown away at the reponse so far to my first item of clothing.  I was so grateful to all the bloggy comments I got to my little cushion post.  But I LOVE crochet!  My relationship with sewing is not quite the same though.  So your words of encouragement are so very appreciated.

Being able to crochet and use a sewing machine somewhat, just broadens the range of items one can create.  I love that.
As I continue to sew ... rip ... sew, my mind wanders back to when I first laid hands on a sewing machine.  I was nervous!  I hesitantly let my foot press the pedal (just like I did when I first got in to the driver's seat of a car).  Crazy, I know.  I had a friend walk and talk me through it.  What a help it is to have someone do that!  It's just the same when I read your kind words and excellent tips.  The funny thing is that I grew up going to my nan's house regularly and watching her sew up clothes for us in a flash.  I just never thought to learn or give it a go myself.  Now, when I use this borrowed-from-lovely-sister-in-law sewing machine, childhood memories come flooding back too.  Of fitting sessions, the buzz of the machine, the chatter of mother and daughter.

In my excitement of almost finishing something wearable, I forgot to mention a little fabric backstory.  The fabric that I used (and the one I'm using) were given to my then 7 year old by a tailor at one of the fabric shops here in Jeddah.  He handed her the "scraps" and said she could have dolls' clothes made out of them!

By the way, the ric rac idea came from this post, where you'll find a link to the pattern.

my creative space

Once again the week has just flown by.  I've been playing with the borrowed sewing machine and have come up with my first garment.  For my 10 year old.  Oh it's not perfect!

The neck is too small for starters.  So it needs a button at the back.  Some bits are just plain messy!  The crocheted ric-rac was fun, quick and easy to make up.  And thanks to Kate for giving me the guts to try this out!

So, I'm planning to get on with some more crocheted edging for another top but this time, for my 8 year old!

Remember, you can head over to Kirsty's for more creative spaces!

pink, mainly

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The girls' have a new dressing table and in true girly-girl style, my girly girl wants to dress it in pink.  She'd like the entire room (that she shares with her not-as-girly sister) to contain more pink.  But, oh well.

I started things off for her with a doily.  Yes, a Grandma Twinkle Doily!

Following on from the pink theme, I crocheted a bit of edging for above-mentioned daughter.

And a couple of sweaters for a couple of tiny babies!

Twins?

I don't know how many teddy bear sweater patterns are out there but this was one I made up as I went along.  These teddy bears are about 30cm or 12 inches tall.  If you'd like a pattern, just let me know!

Some other things I'm into:

Lovely "smelly" candles.  The Caramel Apple smells delicious and is my kids' favourite.  But the Evergreen one is mine!

And more colourful crochet.
