colour ... after a grey patch

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

I am so touched by the gesture of a lovely blogging sister!  She has featured my crochet work on one of her beautiful blogs

Speaking of crochet, I have some to share with you.  I was away from blogging for a while as my grandmother passed away two weeks ago.

Soon after, I continued an old, monochrome crochet project.  But I feel that crocheting too much of one colour pulls me to more colourful crochet.  Firstly though, I managed to finish off another old project.  Do you remember all those squares I used to blog (a bit too much) about?  Yes, there were those greeny bluey ones that became a blanket/throw.

There were a load more of the crazy, whacky colours though, and they became this:

One crazy coloured blanket or throw!

I also had yet another girly crochet request: something to cover this scruffy-topped,  bedside table

There was a pattern I'd been wanting to try out for AGES.  Others have done it too.  So I thought I'd use it for this.

Now it sits happily in the newly painted, girly-pink, girls' bedroom!

And because I can't JUST be working on old projects like this

here's something new.

Colours that I've been wanting to put together for a while and a Sarah London pattern I've been after for a longer while.

finally ... some of those squares ...

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

... have become something.

I ended up putting the bluey greeny squares together.

Some big squares and some little squares.

I'm just pleased to have A finished product!

I don't know where it will live.

But that's ok.

As long as it gets used.

It's being used as I post!

cal 2009: december squares, some wips and crafty goals

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

As I glance over at a pile of squares, I know that the end is in sight.  Whether it will be an end that is pleasing to the eye, I don't know.  But it gave me a chance to develop my crochet skills and to make my first BIG project ... or projects! Yes, I think I might have two blankets out of this chaotic heap.

These were December's squares:

And here are some projects that I'd hoped would be finished before 2010, but anyway...

Rippling around...

A boring looking mesh-type project .  Yes! I have some shiny new hooks!

Some red ribbing ...

To the end this post, some of the things I would like to try in the future on the crafting-front are:
  • more Irish crochet (I have done some but not much)
  • to learn Tunisian crochet
  • to learn continental knitting
  • to get my hands on a sewing machine!
In sha Allah!

    cal 2009: february squares

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Yep, you know, some time at the beginning of the year we had a month called February? And way back then, I crocheted two of the CAL squares for the month. But I wasn't best pleased with them. I changed hook size by about April and for the sake of consistency decided that I would do previous squares again. I did. But then I also decided to crochet the other two squares for February that I hadn't already done. So here they all are:

In case you want the patterns, on the left we have Caring Hearts. The top right is the Two Tone square. Below that we have the One Heart and at the bottom, Center Heart.

Most of my squares are bright, solid colours, but I do have some creams, pinks and light purples. If they don't all go together, there are going to have to be two separate blankets!

    cal 2009: august squares

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

I'm behind on my CAL squares, but did a little while on hols. These are the August squares:

    Popin' Square (top right)

    August Aran Square (top left)

    Jupiter

Now that there aren't that many months left, I'm wondering what my crazy blanket or blankets are going to look like. I have so many colours going on that I think I have group them together according to colour and play around with the layout a bit. I'm wondering if the small squares should go together to form a small blanket or whether it might be nicer to just incorporate them in to a bigger blanket with the big squares.

    cal 2009: january squares

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Just before I go, here are January's squares. I did actually crochet them in January but killed the yarn by ironing it! So I've re-done them with the very same yarn and actually like that crimped effect. Sorry about the terrible lighting in the last two and no blocking, not even any weaving in!

    cal 2009: july squares

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Just when you thought I'd forgotten/given up on (delete as appropriate) the Crochet-A-Long ... Here are last months squares:

    Kingfield Square (6")
Bright and Cheery (top left) Perhaps not as "bright and cheery" as my usual stashbuster squares.
Lovely in Green ... and pink and purple too, eh?

    cal 2009: june squares

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

No, I hadn't forgotten about the CAL. I just wanted to post all of the squares for the month together.

This is the 6" square for the month:

    Eliot Square

And then we have the two 12" squares. Remember, I'm stash-busting (i.e. I'm using up all those odd yarn balls of various colours that were bought at a car boot sale on our summer holidays!)

    Bold Square

    cal 2009: victorian dream

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Did you notice something green in that jar jacket post? You did? Well, here it is, another square for the CAL.

    VicD1

This is the Victorian Dream square, a 12" square for May. It's a bit lacey but I think I like it.

    cal 2009: april square

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

    April

To start off my CAL posts, I'll show you my most recent square.

It's actually the April 6" square which I managed to get done in May! The thing about this square is that it's made up of triple crochets (US) or double trebles (UK). Whatever you call them, they're longer stitches. I actually thought that I wouldn't like crocheting this square. But I did! It works up really quickly and I wouldn't mind doing some more for a future project.

    Here's the pattern.

    crochet-a-long 2009

    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

I've made a few attempts so far at crocheting large items like throws and blankets but I get bored easily. So I saw this crochet-a-long (CAL) on Ravelry, I thought it would be a great way for me to:

    1. Try out different square patterns
    2. Use up a lot of the yarn Hubby had picked up at a car boot sale on our summer holidays (some serious stash-busting)!
    3. AND end up with a lovely blanket in the end

In addition to the above, I've also looked in to and learnt about different joining methods and different stitches and techniques too. There are usually two 12" squares and one 6" square picked out for everyone to crochet each month. It's up to you which ones you do (if any). The great thing is you get to pick other people's brains if something's not working for you or if you're just not sure what a pattern means. I'm not up-to-date on my squares but I will post what I've done in no particular order. My thoughts are that most of my squares will be bright and I'll join them all up with black. I'm not sure if I'll end up with one big and one small blanket or just one BIG blanket! I'll decide once they're all done in sha Allah.
